Three U.S. Senators have introduced the Cannabidiol and Marijuana Research Expansion Act to Congress.
The Bill aims to encourage scientific and medical research on marijuana and its compounds. This includes cannabidiol, or CBD. This will help to “improve the process for conducting valid medical research on marihuana, and to streamline the development of safe and effective FDA-approved medicines.“
If passed, provisions in the Bill will:
- Significantly reduce the barriers to marijuana (and thus CBD) research
- Allow for the import of marijuana, marijuana seeds or CBD to be used for medical research
- Expedite the approval/review process to reduce backlog and waiting times for researchers
- Allow doctors to talk to their patients about the potential harms and benefits of marijuana derivatives, including CBD
