Cancer is a dreaded diagnosis for any pet owner to receive. And stats tell us that more than 50% of dogs aged 10 and up will develop some type of cancer in their lifetime, so unfortunately it is (or may already be) a real possibility for many of us.
November is Pet Cancer Awareness Month, so we thought it the prefect time to discuss CBD oil for dogs with cancer.
There’s a lot of talk about what CBD can do. We’ve seen the research about things like pain and inflammation, epilepsy, and anxiety. But what does the research tell us about CBD oil for dogs with cancer?
Cancer in Dogs
Unlike many animals, dogs are susceptible to many of the same cancers as people. This includes lymphoma, bone cancer, mast cell tumors, and bladder cancer.
Since our dogs are at a higher risk than ever, it’s important to keep an eye out for signs that may signal something is going on.
Trust your instincts; if you feel like something’s not quite right, talk to your vet.
Some of the common warning signs are similar to those with people:
- a lump or bump under the skin
- abdominal swelling
- wounds or sores that won’t heal
- coughing or trouble breathing
- signs of pain
- sudden weight loss
- change in appetite
- lethargy or depression
That said, sometimes there are little or no signs, especailly early on. Trust your instincts; if you feel like something’s not quite right, talk to your vet.
As we mentioned, 50% of dogs 10 and older will develop cancer. That’s the bad news. The semi-good news (if there’s any to be had here) is that experts say half of all cancers can be cured if they’re caught early.
Treating cancer in dogs usually involves chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, or a combo of the three. The treatment regimen will depend on the type of cancer your dog has, and how advanced it is (the stage). It may also depend on your dog’s current condition and overall health.
Experts say half of all cancers can be cured if they’re caught early.
And research tells us that CBD can play a role.
CBD Oil for Dogs with Cancer
Maybe you’ve heard that CBD can cure cancer. While perhaps that’s something we’ll be able to claim in the future, especially with all the new research being done, it isn’t something we can say definitively right now.
However, the research is being done. For example, researchers at Ontario’s University of Guelph are preparing for a 3 year study into treating dog cancer with CBD.
The nice thing is, there is a lot of research that suggests CBD oil can be incredibly helpful when it comes to cancer in dogs.

CBD has been shown to help with these common cancer symptoms and the effects of cancer treatment:
Yes, you read that last one correctly. Studies show us evidence that prevent cell growth, prevent cancer cells from migrating, and induce cell death!
If you’ve been curious about using CBD for your dog with cancer, research shows that it has the potential to significantly improve health and wellbeing, whether by helping your dog deal with the pain or weakened immune system caused by cancer, or the side effects of treatment. And while we can’t actually say yet that CBD can cure your dog’s cancer, we have hope that it’s on the horizon.
