CBD 101: What is CBD Oil?

With all the buzz about it, maybe you know a lot. Maybe you only know a little. Maybe you really just want the basics. We’ll deliver.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD is short for Cannabidiol, a non-intoxicating compound found in the flower of the Cannabis sativa plant.

It’s nothing new. The cannabis plant has actually been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years.

Will CBD Make You Feel High?

It is one of more than 100 cannabinoids in cannabis. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is another, but unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive. That means it doesn’t produce a “high” as THC does.

In fact, although they both come from the same plant, that plant actually has 2 different species: hemp and marijuana. Both contain CBD, but hemp has way more CBD and way less THC compared to marijuana.

How Does CBD Work?

Your body has an endocannabinoid system (ES) that communicates with different organs throughout your body. The ES helps to regulate functions such as sleep, immune-system responses, and pain.

There are two types of cannabinoid receptors in your body:

  • CB1 receptors – found mostly in the brain and central nervous system (CNS)
  • CB2 receptors – live throughout the rest of the body: the organs, the glands, and the immune system

Your body produces some cannabinoids on its own, but you can up the ante with CBD oil.

What is CBD Oil Good For?

There is both empirical and anecdotal evidence that shows CBD id good for:

  • Pain and inflammation
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Seizures and epilepsy
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Skin disorders
  • Digestive issues
  • Cancer-related symptoms

Is CBD Addictive?

All signs point to no. There have been no reports of CBD becoming a problem as far as addiction.

According to a report from the World Health Organization, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential.”

So, what is CBD in a nutshell? Pretty fantastic.
