The booming, the pounding, the nausea, the sensitivity to light. If you get headaches, or worse, migraines, you know the feeling.
When the tingle comes on, you know you’re in for a long day or night.
We’re often asked about the value of CBD oil for headaches. We’re happy to fill you in.
CBD Oil for Headaches: The Research
Headaches can turn your entire day on it’s head, literally. So it’s no wonder suffers will try anything for relief. Some look to diet changes, others to pharmaceutical drugs. Sometimes these work, but sometimes they don’t.
CBD to the rescue (I feel like I say this far too often, but it’s literally my go-to, so I can’t help it).
Just as it helps with countless other health conditions, CBD oil for headaches has become a boon for those who suffer.
Well, research shows that medical marijuana specifically decreases the frequency of migraine headaches and can help relief of the pain.
But that’s marijuana, not CBD in particular.
Research here is a little more indirect, but promising nonetheless. Several different studies show that CBD, has substantial anti-inflammatory effects.
These anti-inflammatory effects are important when it comes to reducing your pain. And headaches, especially migraines, are painful, there’s no doubt about that.
One study in particular notes:
“Cannabinoids provide a potential approach to pain management with a novel therapeutic target and mechanism. Chronic pain often requires a polypharmaceutical approach to management, and cannabinoids are a potential addition to the arsenal of treatment options.”
At the very least, these studies show it has some serious potential. With its recorded safety record and little concern for negative side effects, it’s worth trying if you want to rely less on pharmaceutical drugs.
Why Does it Work?
CBD has the potential to be an important headache relief alternative because of how it reacts with the Endocannabinoid System (ES).
This is a system found all throughout your body. It’s made up of different things, but what we’re most interested in as far as pain are the different receptors and ions in the system.
When you take CBD oil, it interacts with the cannabinoid receptors and ions throughout your body’s ES. It works by indirectly impacting the various receptors, causing some sort of change.
That change is meant to bring about balance. And balance means pain relief.

Is CBD Oil Legal?
If you’re worried that that little headache miracle in a bottle’s going to get you into trouble, don’t be. Thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp and hemp-derived products were made legal across the U.S.
So, if you’re getting hemp-derived CBD, you’re good to go! Just be sure to check the label.
